Baseball

America's pastime is coming to a close in dramatic fashion. This postseason has been one of the best in recent memory, most notably with the fiercest rivalry in sports, the Yankees and Red Sox, playing for a spot to the World Series. The Bronx Bombers were able to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead, largely due to the bats of Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui, both of whom contributed to a 19-run rout in Game 3. However, the BoSox have refused to let New York win the series without first earning every bit of it. Those who were lucky enough to catch games 4 and 5 saw two long battles, to the 12th and 14 innings, respectively. In each, David Ortiz knocked in the winning runs in a span of 26 innings and 27 hours.

With the series returning back to New York, the Yankees are confident they can take one of the remaining two games. Expect the same tension, excitement and hustle shown through the previous five games. New York's key to victory is returning to the formula used for the first three games. Their pitching must remain strong and confident. Even against a strong Yankee team that knows how to win in October, Boston has the confidence in themselves to defy the odds and stage the greatest comeback in baseball history.

And while it seems that the media would like you to believe otherwise, there is another series going on, and it's a doozie. The St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros are currently locked in a heated battle, the Astros one game up coming into game 6. This series has hit both sides of the spectrum: While Carlos Beltran and Albert Pujols are just two of the players swinging a big stick in high-scoring games, those lucky enough to see Game 5 witnessed a classic pitchers' duel. Woody Williams and Brandon Backe both pitched one-hitters through the ninth inning until Jeff Kent kit a three-run blast in the bottom of the ninth to win the game for Houston. Knives couldn't cut tension this thick.

With the remaining two in Busch Stadium, the Cardinals will be in familiar territory as they attempt to come from behind and continue their winning season. Both teams' bullpens have been suspect and usually the cause of that teams loss. Expect the same to be true for the conclusion to the NLCS. With lineups like the Astros' Killer B's and the Cardinals' own Murderer's Row, anything is still possible. Be there to witness the excitement, as both series promise to be any sports fan's dream come true.
